9 ways to treat heat damaged hair naturally.

Do you want to know how  to treat heat damage?

Great!

I’ll tell you!

Imagine this scenario for a moment,

You walk into a salon, get the perfect blowout, flat iron or silk press of your life, walk back home with
a smile as perfect as sunshine, one week later, you wash your hair and boom! You realise that your curls
are gone. What’s left of your once bouncy curls are; broken edges, split ends and brittle texture.

You find the hair that you’ve been nurturing for years becomes a shamble.
Partatic right?

Let’s roll on………...

So what is heat damage?

It is an effect that makes strands or bundles of curly hair become dry, crinkly, and no longer curly.
Usually occurs after excessive use of heated irons to straighten hair or harsh hair relaxers.

Curly hair is extremely fragile and is easily heat damaged during heat styling. When heat of above 370°
is applied to natural hair, there is high probability that you will end up with heat damage.

Inasmuch as there are aesthetic benefits to using heat on your hair, as it causes the outermost layer of
hair (cuticle) to: lie flat, release natural curl, release moisture, hold a different shape, become silky, it
can also be devastating to your hair.

You don’t need to cut your hair if you are suffering from heat damage. There are many ways by which
you can treat your heat damaged hair without necessarily cutting them. We will be looking at some
natural ways to treat damaged hair below;

So how do you treat your heat damaged hair?

1) Stay Away from heat styling

If you are a heat-styling freek, you should completely stay away from any style that involves heat when
treating heat damage. You can resort to any natural style that requires no heat for styling.  Air dry your
hair rather than blow drying, or sitting under the dryer. Do natural styles like Afro, Bantu Knots or wear
your hair naturally curly.

2) Protective Styling
Do more Protective hairstyles when treating heat damage. You can camouflage your damaged hair by
doing up-dos, braids or Bantu knots. These are simple styles that don't require over-straining of the hair,
and will help the oils and other treatments penetrate your hair easily.

3) Olive Oil Conditioning
Warm 1/2 glass of olive oil (do not boil it), and then rub it into your hair in order to put moisture back
into your dry hair . Cover tresses with a plastic bag, then wrap everything in a towel. Leave it for about
45 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. Add deep conditioning and rinse completely then air dry.

Olive oil hydrates hair and delivers a dose of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids which restores strength
and shine to hair strands. The Omega-3 fatty acids will penetrate the hair, providing it with moisture from
within to prevent breakage and ensure that the hair stays strong and kinky.

You can carry out this exercise twice a week for a proper treatment till you feel that your hair is okay.

4) The Avocado treatment.
Mash a ripe avocado with an egg, then apply the paste to wet hair. Leave on for at least 20 minutes, and
rinse thoroughly. Repeat this treatment once a week till when you realise your hair is back to normal. You
can also follow this routine once a month on your healthy hair to keep it in good health.

Avocados are rich in vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals that will help your dry hair to retain
moisture and texture. It also contains natural oils which will help provide your hair with long lasting and
deep hydration.

5) Massage hair in butter
Apply a small amount of butter to your dry and brittle for a glossy shine. Massage it into your dry hair,
then cover your hair with a shower cap for about half an hour. Shampoo as usual, then rinse thoroughly.
For a better effect, melt the butter, let it cool, and skim the fat off the top to clarify it. Then allow it to cool
a bit (still warm) before you apply it on your hair.

6) Use apple cider vinegar.
Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 3 egg whites, then rub the
mixture into your hair. Keep your hair covered for about half an hour using plastic wrap or a shower cap,
then shampoo and rinse. The acidity from the vinegar seals the outermost layer of your hair and will help
your frizzy or fried hair lay smooth and flat. The vinegar neutralizes the hair’s pH and closes the cuticle.

7) Use Natural oils

Make natural oils your best friends. Available at health food stores, olive, jojoba, avocado, coconut and
sweet almond oils are all wonderful elixirs for damaged hair. If your hair is thick and heavy, coconut oil
works well. Dampen your hair and apply small amounts of the botanical oil until your hair is thoroughly
covered. Top off with shower cap and warm towel for about 30 minutes, then rinse and shampoo your hair
out. Leave it to air dry or use a microfire towel.

8) Rinse with tea

Use a quart of cooled, brewed
unsweetened tea as a final rinse after your regular shampoo. Tea can enhance
hair color, so make sure to use a tea that works with your hair color.

Tea is not only a sore throat remedy, it can also be used to give the hair a natural shine and improve its health.

9) Wrap wet hair dry

Instead of rubbing your hair after you get it wet, wrap up your damaged hair in a cotton towel, let the cotton
absorb the moisture for a few minutes. This helps protect against further split ends. Don’t use force on the
hair with the towel, or the burned hair strands will break and fall off.
