How often should natural hair be silkpressed?

Judging by the gorgeous look and compliments you get after a silk press, you may want to consider it as your daily routine.

For a normal hair (non naturalistas), a silk press can be done every week or once in two weeks. Depending on the individual. But for Naturalistas like you who enjoy silk press, a 30-45 days routine is ideal for you. This range also varies with the season.

Also, follow this routine if you are not suffering from heat damage, and your hair easily reverts back on the wash day.

There is NO WAY to do constant silk press styles or exercise on your hair, and NOT damage your hair. High heat will inevitably take more of your new growth than if you had left it untouched. So I don't recommend constant heat if you are in a period of hair growth or natural state.

If you must straighten your hair, try using pure protein/keratin treatments formulated for black hair. They don't have any crazy ingredients or relaxers. The keratin strengthens your hair, and makes it easier to style.

For you not to be tempted to silk press your natural hair often, you need  to make sure the present one lasts even longer. If the hair comes into any contact with moisture from water, humidity or sweat, it will begin to convert back to its natural curly state. So you need to prevent your silk press from coming to contact with moisture.

Normally, a perfectly done silk press will last for 2-3 weeks. After this time, you can start washing your hair and wear it in its natural state for the next one to two months before silk pressing it again. This way, your hair  will stay natural and will not suffer from heat damage.

Also, when heat styling your hair, make sure you don’t overheat it. Let the temperature of the flat iron or blow dryer be below 350°, and don’t allow the flat iron to reach the roots of your hair. Always apply natural heat protectants to your hair before styling, after you must have shampooed and deep-conditioned the hair.

If you do this, you will always have your natural hair back after every silk press.

Note that the maximum for you to silk press natural hair should be 4-6 times a year.
